The Prince and the Showgirl with Laurence Olivier
May 6: Richard Avedon photographs Marilyn, her torso covered in feathers (her sexual plumage) and wearing high heels, her left leg bent and brought up to her body so that the leg projects outward horizontally. Her right arm stretches out diagonally and clutches a fan, and her head is tilted right with her eyes half closed and her mouth wide open, suggesting the dynamism of her erotic allure. Another Avedon shot shows her in a spangled dress. She wraps herself in a silver fur stole that seems almost to waft out of the frame in her extended right arm, while her left hand touches her shoulder and she projects one of those dreamy poses with half-closed eyesâalthough this time with a closed mouth that suggests a little more mystery and not quite so much availability.
May 12: At Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, Marilyn makes the ceremonial first kick at a soccer match between the United States and Israel. She is photographed standing in an open field and with her tongue out as she prepares to kick the ball. She hits it hard and sprains two of her toes. But she stays to the end of the game and presents a trophy to the winning team.
May 13â14: Marilyn accompanies Miller to Washington, D.C., where he goes on trial for contempt of Congress. She stays with his attorney, Joseph Rauh, and Rauhâs wife.
May 14: Millerâs trial begins.
May 23: Marilyn speaks to reporters on the phone and meets others in the Rauh living room. She tells them she fully supports her husband and has spent her time reading books in the Rauh library. âA wifeâs place is with her husband,â she declares.
May 24: Marilyn and Miller leave the Rauhsâ home and travel by train back to New York City.
May 31: Miller is convicted on two counts of contempt of Congress and is fined $500 and given a one-month suspended jail sentence. He immediately appeals the verdict.
June: Miller and Monroe settle in Amagansett, Long Island, about two hours by car from New York City. They rent a house on Story Hill Farm. Miller writes, the couple stroll the beach, and Marilyn reads and makes visits to the Rostens nearby, where she is photographed walking hand-in-hand with Hedda and Patricia (the Rostensâ daughter).
June 1: Marilyn turns thirty-one.
June 3: Life publishes âUnlikely Pair Make Great Match.â
June 12: Sam Shaw shoots a crowd looking through a store window, while Marilyn holds and examines what looks like a strap for a handbag. He photographs Miller (without glasses) in an intimate pose with Marilyn, who seems about to kiss him, with one of the city bridges in the background. Other shots show Marilyn eating outdoors and reading a newspaper (the couple next to her seem not to notice).
June 13: Monroe and Miller attend the premiere of The Prince and the Showgirl at Radio City Music Hall. Marilyn sees a pregnant Amy Greene. Jack Warner, who distributed the film, is also there. A party at the Waldorf Astoria follows the screening.
